Engine-driven or electric winch?

The choice rarely comes down to price. More often it comes down to where the machine has to stand and whether it is allowed to run there.

Engine-driven winch

The biggest advantage is independence. The machine stands where it is needed and works — no generator, no power dragged across half the site. Combustion drives also give more power for the same machine weight, which is why at higher pulling forces they have virtually no competition.

Electric winch

Quiet, no exhaust fumes, lighter and simpler to operate. It fits in a lift, in a basement and in an underground car park, where a combustion engine must not be started. For fibre-optic and telecom work it is usually the default choice.

And somewhere in between — hydraulic drive

In larger machines a diesel power pack drives a hydraulic pump, and only that drives the drum. This layout gives a smooth start, constant force under load and precise speed control. It is the standard in machines for power-network work.

How to decide

Ask yourself three questions: is a combustion engine allowed on site, is there a power supply there, and what pulling force is needed. The answers usually narrow the choice down to one drive type.
